Go ahead and set it there.
I just want to make sure that it was right there.
Okay?
-guitar tuning- They love you.
They support you and we're all in this together, right?
We're here to suppoert each other.
And Logan, is the star!
Make sure you sing into the mic.
Yeah, not far away.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Star Seed Show.
And, the star of it today is Logan Felton.
We played professionally, probably for 23 years.
Like, we still play.
But, you know, the focus is more now on Star Seed.
But we definitely still play.
I mean, it's just in our hearts, you know it's in our blood.
About three and a half years ago, we were in, it was right after Covid.
We were still in Florida that following winter.
We were playing like we always did.
But, it was just, you know, it was just getting to the point for me personally where I just wasn't feeling it as much anymore.
I was ready for something different, ready for something new.
I didn't know what that was.
That's all I had done for 23 years was music.
And I mean, I have other skills and I can do other things, but my passion was that.
But like anybody else you want, you want more.
And I just couldn't take it nomore.
I was like, I just want to be with my grandkids.
We didn't have a house.
Everything we owned was in this RV, which we loved that, but it was time to, we said, let's go get it.
Let's go see if we can get a house.
And so we ended up finding this amazing little old farmhouse right here in town.
And.
But what do we do for jobs?
Okay, so what are we gonna do?
We're going to be full time up in winter again, you know?
But we were all in and I said, well, maybe I can teach.
All right, here we go.
One of my friends, I just happened to mention it to her, and she said, well, sign my kids up.
And then and this is all still in Florida.
I'm talking on the phone to people.
That night we go out and play a gig.
Some Walker people came in.
They're in, their in the audience, which was not common.
It was rare that we would have people from town.
I said, I think we're going to move back to Walker and I'm going to maybe teach.
I don't even know if I can.
They’re ,like,sign my kids up.
In a day I had like eight kids.
And I had never, I did’t even know if I could do this.
You know, am I, am I?
Yes, I play the guitar.
Does that mean I can teach?
-ukelale and singing- So she's doing lessons in the house, which was great.
And she’s got like 30 students?
And they're coming in the house, Which is fine.
doing lessons.
We outgrew the house.
We went from this tiny room doing lessons.
I did, you know, in this tiny little room.
And then I said, well, okay, we're going to go down and we're going to start putting the lessons down the basement.
So we got the basement -instructions - So here let me teach you.
I'm going, when I'm doing, you can go... Go up.
I think that's more natural.
We outgrew the basement.
And then Jeff said, do you want to build a garage?
It's really the only thing missing here.
And I said, yes, I do want to build a garage, but you got to give me a bonus room above it.
And in my head, I picture just a few folding chairs around in a circle.
And my brain had just kept imagining.
-guitar playing- I just knew how good these kids were, and I wanted to provide a platform for them to call their own.
You know, I ended up finding the name or just picking the name Star Seed We knew we were going to have an upstairs.
So, one of the antique dealers in town here, we found out that he has these old auditorium seats, like 48 of them, that were in the Walker High School.
I mean, this thing just evolved into what it is.
Just day by day and,.... Things keep coming in here, like, you know, someone says, I want to donate this guitar or I want to I want to give an amp to Star Seed, which we need.
I mean, we we need these things if we're going to put on shows you need the equipment.
We didn't have a ton of money.
You know, we had what we had.
But, you know, to make it how I kept envisioning it.
I feel like it just feels magical.
I mean, when we first started, we were in her house because this garage wasn't built or Star Seed wasn’t built, but then we started.
When she started building it, we were all so excited, and I had no idea it was going to be like this.
But it just feels like you're in a different world here.
Let's do, “Horse With No Name”.
So the lessons that I teach, I teach mostly guitar, but a lot of kids start out with ukulele, so I start them with the basic chords.
Of ukulele.
Six.
La la la la... D minor, la,la,la... Alright, you know D minor, right?
There's a warm up.
All right.
We're going to do that one for a show.
You know, I'm learning as a teacher.
Like I said, I've never done this before, but, I've learned so much about the about pace and and how, to how to draw on their strengths, like know, I can pick out a song, that I like and say, ok, I’m going to teach this to this kid, try to teach this today or whatever.
Give me a bend in there somewhere.
-guitar playing- My thing is, If I teach them the song they want to know they're going to play that song.
They're going to want to play that song.
That makes sense.
And so I really try to pull out in them what what they like, what kind of music they like.
And some of them don't know, you know, they're just learning about themselves as far as this musical journey.
And then remember that little bend right here.
That little......13 B To me that's like the coolest sound ever.
Kids that came in here and started on ukulele, then they went to guitar, acoustic guitar, and then she's got an electric guitar.
So they're like, yeah, I want, I want to play the electric guitar, So now we’ve got these kids went from ukulele to acoustic guitar.
Now they're playing or blues on the electric guitar.
-guitar playing- This if we need a bass player, Hey, you know, so and so, do you want to learn how to play bass?
I didn't really choose to play bass.
Kristi just said, I think that you'd be a really good bass player.
And I tried it one day, and I really liked it.
I really want to get better at bass cause I've only been playing bass for like, a few months now.
But, I do want to get better at acoustic guitar too.
Cause I don't play a lot, and, I still want to keep working on it.
And then maybe some of them, well I want to play drums, you know.
Okay, let's have you play some drums “There’s a place up ahead” “that I'm going, just as fast as my feet can fly.” Vocal.
Oh, I teach them harmony.
I pull out whatever I can in these kids.
You know, I try to go with their talents, but try to help them to realize the talents that they do have, they may not see it.
You know, like I say, I'm here to build their confidence.
In order to, like, get something or like, like do something right.
You have to just keep practicing and practicing.
And sometimes it gets annoying because you never get it right.
But if you just, like, leave it one day and then come back the next day, it really does pay off.
Cause a year ago, or I started like three years ago for guitar, I was like unsure.
Cause a year ago, or I started like three years ago for guitar, I was like unsure.
I was like, how am I going to be able to play like Christy?
But I've gotten a few notes down, so.
Well like, Christy will make it interesting.
It's not just like, straight on, like, it be like, more fun than you would think.
“You’ve lost that lovin feeling.” Whoa, that loving feeling.” “You lost that loving feeling.” “Now is gone, gone, gone.” “Whoa, whoa.” “Budup, budup, budup.” And that’s it.
Let’s practice it one more time.
That's your first fret.
That whole area.
Second fret, third, fourth and so on.
And I teach adults too.
I don't have a ton of adults, but I do have a few.
And I love that, they are like, I've always wanted to do this, and I just kept putting it off.
See, you adjusted your wrist and made a difference.
I just want to check this off my bucket list, and we go over the chords and they're better than they think they are.
And I love, I love it.
It's all about just building confidence.
“I've been through the desert on a horse with no name.” “It felt good to be out of the rain” “In the desert,” “you can remember your name,” “cause they ain’t no one ..... Alot of people have never been here before.
It’s so new.
So they don't know what to expect.
Okay, the shows at 6:00.
Come at ten to or come at quarter to.
And people start coming up, And this is all private.
I mean, this is at our house.
You know, our little yard and we try to have a little fire going.
One day we had an accordion player, -accordian playing- You come into the bottom part of our garage and we've got it sort of decorated.
-Accordian music- I was like, we gotta have a popcorn machine.
When you walk in, you got to have that popcorn machine.
We found a $50 popcorn machine.
You know, a commercial.
-Accordian music- One of my favorites.
The bathroom downstairs.
Love to keep that feeling in the bathroom down there, as weird as that sounds.
But.. Prince is honored in the bathroom at Star Seed.
I'm a huge, huge Prince fan, so I gave him the whole bathroom.
Then you come up the stairway.
It's all black like a theater vibe.
Guitars hanging everywhere.
Posters of all the greats.
Are you ready for that another show?
No!
(laughter) No?...Are your ready?
We have a backstage.
So in the backstage is the green room.
On the wall.
I have, like, all, all chords and different things.
So that's for my lessons and stuff.
But it's just a neat atmosphere.
But the kids can enter from the backstage.
We have an actual stage entrance.
And the acoustics in here.
Yeah.
We worked really hard on... We had to put panels around and and we did.
And we kept checking the sound and, you know, the last thing you want is people.
Oh, it was a good show, but it was just too loud.
I mean, they'll never come back.
And, you know, you know, you got all those things are so important, you know, to dial in the details.
And it was all the details.
We did everything up here.
Me and Kristi did.
Pretty much, yeah.
“Now it won't come back” “cause it's oh-so-happy” “And now I've got a hole for the world to see.” We do at least probably one show a month with the kids "....no, no.
No, no, no No, no.
You're not the one for me" I don't even know the song.
Where’s my book?
You know that term herding cats?
Try to put on a starseed show?
To get all these kids together for a show.
Okay, well, we're going to have to just get through it.
And I don't know what we'll do.
Do you remember the solo at all?
Kind of.
Okay, well, we'll just we'll just wing it today, then.
-guitar tuning- Is that loud enough?
We're not going to be this crazy at the night of the show.
Is everybody up here?
We're going to switch positions here.
Hang on here!
Bring that that little closer.
Actually.
I don't want to go through it right now.
-kid chattler- Start on 1,2,3... “Midnight, gettin' uptight, where are you?
“You said you'd meet me, now it's quarter to two.” “I know I'm hangin' but I'm still wantin' you.” “I hate myself for loving you.” -Guitar playing- Ya!
Not bad for the first time.
right?
-soft music_ Right now I feature just one student and we put students around that student.
Thank you for being here!
All right.
So, we're going to start rolling okay.
So give it up for our hosts for the night Sophie Hoffman and Easton Eckart!
-cheers and applause- And they come here, and they're all in because, you know, it's because we built this for them.
You know, we built this for these kids to have a place to play.
“She's a big teaser.” “We both lie silently still In the dead of the night” I love what happens at these shows, because, I'm trying to teach them how to let themselves shine, how to support someone else and give them the moment to shine.
-trumpet playing- -singing- It's about trying to help these kids know that they already are a star just because they're here, they're human beings, and we're all in this together.
Okay, remember, it's the one where you use all your fingers.
Your total.
Your total finger.
Second fret.
Oh!
You use the whole finger on it, remember?
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Just like that d6.
Yep.
And then, here we go.
My grab my Uki.
Are we ready?
Let's do a little.
We'll just do a little round.
I'll help you out here.
Okay.
Here we go.
Okay, here we go.
So E minor, remember steps.
Stair steps, second fret, third fret, fourth fret.
Remember that?
It's been a while since we've done.
We did this song.
I could be teaching one kid, but that kid goes out and affects other people.
Like, it's just that ripple effect of music.
Music, as they call it, the universal language.
E 6...... E minor, I've seen friendships get mended, you know, in the, in the backstage area at Star Seed.
Just nothing but good stuff.
It's just good stuff going on.
I love it and I think it's music that's doing that.
Just, like, super magical.
And there's always a positive vibe in here.
Even if you're not getting something right, she's always like, Kristi’s always very nice.
And, I don't know, it's super fun We took a chance.
We went with our idea and said, let's build this.
And,it's,it's unbelievable.
“Love was such an easy game to play.” “Now we need a place to hide away.” “Oh, I believe,” “in yesterday.” There's some people that specifically call themselves a Star Seed, and they just know they're not....; They've got some kind of different purpose here, and.... Star Seed for me is not as much about that.
I love that, though, don't get me wrong, but it's about learning to find your own.. You already are a star.
“Get back.” “Get back.” “Get back to where you once belong.” “Get back.” “Get back.” “Get back!” -cheers and applause- Production costs for this program have been made possible by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, and the members of Lakeland PBS.
