[ Cheers and applause continue ] [ Cheers and applause continue ] I think that the role of an artist is to feel, and I feel so lucky to get to do this with my life.

My job does feel like being brave and jumping off a cliff into feeling in a full-bodied way, and that doesn't always feel super comfortable.

But...But it's honest.

So, I think that performing... it's not that it's my duty to make people happy, because happiness is a complicated emotion.

I think that it is about inviting people to feel, and... when I'm onstage, I'm certainly feeling.

[ Chuckles ] Like, that -- that -- that is for sure.

I don't know.

And I hope that that performance is also something that can remind people that they have more in common than they might think.

That, like, no matter what the difference is between people, everybody knows what it's like to feel sad or what it's like to feel happy or to feel disappointed or excited, and I think that those are the moments in a performance that... that... change something.

It's so nice to get off stage every night and get to... sit down and think about why a show is so special.

Because with music, the second you realize something special is happening... it's already slipping through your fingers, because it's just a moment and it can't be preserved.

And that, to me, is like... the best part about it.

So the questions that I'm asking are like, what makes that moment where everything's connected and I can look over at my guitar player and we're thinking the same thing, we both land the same move at the same time, or I can look out into the audience and see that... everybody is moving on the same wave?

Because it's not always like that at the beginning of the show, but by the end, you can know if everybody's hit the same current at the same time.

When I'm singing, there is vibration going through my entire body for, like, two hours during a set.

Like, it changes what is happening to my body on a, like, cellular, molecular level.

Like, I never come out of a tour the same way I went in.

And, in a way, I come out feeling like... clean.

It's like I took the biggest, best bath, because when your whole body is shaking and resonating for two hours for a month long or whatever, how long a tour is... anything that's ready to shake loose kind of naturally shakes loose, and that, to me, is a gift that is given by the crowd and by the band on stage, and...

I don't know.

I just -- I love doing this more than anything, and I feel... so lucky every time I get to step on that stage.

[ Cheers and applause ] My experience with -- with this album was that the feelings were so big that it kind of required a louder voice.

Um, I felt... like I couldn't stay contained and isolated about the feelings, I guess.

I also -- It was my first year living with my best friend roommate and co-writer on lots of the songs, Audrey Hobert, and she knows me very well, so I would come downstairs in the morning with something very obviously on my mind and she would kind of be like, "You," and, like, "What are you thinking about?"

And it led to lots of conversation, laughter, through tougher feelings.

But all of those made their way into the album, and, yeah, very different from "Good Riddance."

The writing process was very different.

Well, I was really scared of it, the concept of performing.

And I remember signing my record deal and feeling nauseous because I knew that it meant that if I was lucky one day that I would be able to play a show.

But I was -- It was my biggest fear, for sure.

Like, um, the concept of playing music to another human being face to face, I had really avoided it forever and felt much more comfortable singing quietly in my room.

Um... and I was proved very wrong.

It's -- It's not scary now.

It feels just like a real gift to be able to share in a community that cares about being openly vulnerable, like, next to each other.

It's really rad.
